Shopify to Shopware 6

Shopify to Shopware 6 Migration Guide: From Hosted to High-Control E-Commerce

Facing the limitations of your current Shopify platform can be frustrating, especially when your business has grown beyond what it was at the beginning. Shopify is often the go-to choice for UK merchants who want to get up and running quickly. It offers ease of use, a wide app marketplace, and a hosted environment that lets you focus on selling without worrying about infrastructure. For a time, it can feel like the perfect fit. But as your store expands, your product catalogue grows, and your customers expect more, you may start to feel the strain.

Perhaps you have noticed that your pages are not loading as fast as they used to. This can happen as you add more apps, custom code, or larger amounts of content. You may have run into situations where adding new features requires workarounds or costly third-party solutions. Maybe you have experienced frustration trying to modify your checkout process or build promotions that match your business logic. These are common signals that you have reached the ceiling of what Shopify can comfortably offer.

When your platform starts to slow you down rather than helping you move forward, it is time to think about alternatives. Your technology should support your ideas, not limit them. This is where Shopware 6 comes in. Shopware 6 is designed for merchants who want freedom and control. It gives you ownership of your data, flexibility to design without compromise, and tools to create unique shopping experiences that match your vision.

Migrating to 6 is not simply about switching to a new e-commerce system. It is about upgrading to a platform that can scale with your business, support advanced features out of the box, and provide the performance your customers expect. Shopware’s API-first architecture, flexible CMS, and native support for complex requirements like B2B sales, subscriptions, and internationalisation make it a powerful choice for growing businesses.

At solution25, we specialise in guiding merchants through this transition. We understand that migration is not just a technical task. It is a strategic move that sets the stage for future growth. When done well, migration gives you the opportunity to rethink how your store works and how it can better serve your customers. Our goal is to make this process smooth, stress-free, and tailored to your specific needs.

This guide was created to help you plan and execute a successful migration from Shopify to Shopware 6. It is written in clear, practical language, so that anyone involved in your project, whether a business owner, project manager, or technical lead, can follow along and understand the steps involved.

In the pages ahead, you will learn how to evaluate your current Shopify store and plan a migration that keeps downtime to a minimum. You will see how to safely move your product catalogue, customer accounts, order history, and SEO metadata to your new platform. We will explain how to rebuild your storefront using Shopware 6’s modern CMS and theme tools, giving you more design freedom than ever before.

The guide will also cover how to set up payments, shipping methods, tax rules, and promotional features so that your checkout process runs smoothly from day one. We will show you how to test everything in a safe staging environment before your new store goes live.

By the end, you will have a clear roadmap for migration and the confidence to take this important step. Migration does not have to be overwhelming or risky. With the right planning and the right partner, it can be the key that unlocks the next level of growth for your business. Shopware 6 offers the flexibility, performance, and scalability that modern merchants need. Let us show you how to get there.

1. Migrating Shopify to Shopware 6

Moving from Shopify to Shopware 6 is not simply a technical change. It is a strategic decision that opens up new possibilities for your e-commerce business. This type of migration gives you greater control over your technology, design, and customer experience. Shopware 6 offers flexibility that allows you to shape your store around your business, rather than adjusting your business to fit the limitations of your platform.

To make this transition successful, you need a detailed plan. Migration is not something to rush. A well-structured migration process ensures your data is protected, your store functions properly, and your customers experience a smooth shift. Below, we break the migration down into manageable phases so you can plan thoroughly and avoid common pitfalls.

1.1 Assess Your Current Store

Before you move anything, it is important to take a close look at what your Shopify store contains today. This assessment forms the foundation of your migration plan.

List active apps and themes
Start by making a list of all apps installed on your Shopify store. Document what each app does. For example, some apps may handle customer reviews, loyalty programmes, SEO enhancements, shipping calculators, or advanced reporting. Identify which features these apps provide and consider whether you still need them in your new store. Some of these apps will have direct equivalents in the Shopware ecosystem. Others might need a different solution or could even be replaced with native Shopware features.

Do the same for your themes. Make a note of your current theme and any customisations made. Pay attention to changes in fonts, colours, layout structures, and unique design features. Knowing this detail now will save you time when rebuilding your storefront in Shopware 6.

Identify custom code and modifications
Over time, Shopify stores often accumulate small snippets of custom code. These could be tweaks to the checkout experience, adjustments to product displays, or unique shipping calculations. Review your store carefully to identify any Liquid template changes, JavaScript snippets, or CSS modifications. List these clearly so that they can be reviewed during migration. In Shopware 6, custom logic will need to be rebuilt or adapted using its tools, so understanding what you have now is essential.

Gather business requirements
This is the right moment to engage your wider team. Ask colleagues from sales, marketing, operations, and customer service about the features they rely on daily. Identify workflows that are critical to your business. Make sure you document any unique checkout flows, product bundles, customer group settings, or third-party system integrations that cannot be lost during migration. Prioritise these requirements so you can focus your efforts where it matters most.

Analyse store performance
Look at your current store’s performance. How fast do pages load? Are your SEO rankings where you want them to be? What are your mobile conversion rates like? Identifying performance gaps now helps you set goals for your Shopware 6 store. This way, migration becomes an opportunity not just to switch platforms but to improve customer experience.

1.2 Plan Your Data Migration

Your store’s data is one of its most valuable assets. It includes everything from product listings to customer records and order histories. Moving this data safely and accurately is a critical part of the migration process.

Export product data
Shopify allows you to export your product catalogue as CSV files. Make sure you export all relevant details. This includes product names, descriptions, SKUs, prices, images, and any product variants such as sizes or colours. The more complete your export, the easier your import process will be later.

Export customer and order records
You will also need to export customer records and order histories. These records are important for reporting, customer service, and business continuity. Make sure to capture all details, including contact information, order dates, order statuses, and payment details.

Map data fields
Shopify and Shopware 6 use different naming conventions and data structures. For example, what Shopify calls “Title” might be “product.name” in Shopware. Create a clear mapping of fields to ensure that no data is left behind or misaligned. A spreadsheet or data dictionary can be a valuable tool for this step.

Plan SEO data migration
SEO data is often overlooked during migration. However, preserving your SEO rankings is vital to maintaining traffic and sales. Export metadata including page titles, meta descriptions, and URL slugs. Make sure that you have a plan to import this data into Shopware or set up appropriate redirects.

Review images
Image URLs in Shopify are structured in a specific way. Check that all your product and category images are included in your export. You will need to upload these into Shopware’s media manager and ensure they display correctly in your new store.

1.3 Set Up a Staging Environment

A staging environment provides a safe space where you can build, test, and refine your Shopware 6 store before it goes live. This step is crucial to minimise risk and catch potential issues early.

Install Shopware 6 on staging
Set up a fresh Shopware 6 instance on a server or subdomain that mirrors your production environment. Ensure the PHP version, database configuration, and other server settings match what you plan to use in production.

Import data in stages
Do not try to import everything at once. Start with products so you can check that categories, attributes, and images display as expected. Next, import customer records. Finally, bring in order data. This phased approach makes troubleshooting easier and reduces the risk of errors.

Set up version control
If your migration includes developing custom plugins or themes, make sure your developers use version control. This helps manage code changes and allows for rollbacks if needed.

Enable SSL
Even on a staging server, enabling SSL allows you to test checkout processes and third-party integrations properly. It is best to create a staging environment that functions as closely as possible to your future live store.

1.4 Import and Transform Data

With your staging site ready, it is time to move your data.

Import products
Use Shopware’s import/export tools to load your product catalogue. Validate that all images appear correctly, variants are linked to the right products, and attributes are mapped as intended.

Import customers and orders
Bring in your customer records and order histories. Once imported, review samples to ensure accuracy. Verify that orders are linked to the correct customers and that no data has been lost or corrupted.

Handle SEO metadata
Check that SEO-friendly URLs, meta titles, and descriptions have been imported properly or mapped to your new site structure.

Review and clean up
After importing, review your data within the Shopware admin. Confirm that categories are correctly structured and that products display as expected. Clean up any inconsistencies before moving forward.

1.5 Rebuild Your Storefront Design

Shopware 6 provides powerful design tools that can help you recreate your Shopify store’s look or even improve upon it.

Select a base theme
Begin by choosing a Shopware starter theme that matches your brand’s visual identity.

Customise using Theme Manager
Adjust settings for fonts, colours, spacing, and layout.

Recreate layouts
Use the CMS builder to create custom homepages, product pages, category pages, and landing pages. The drag-and-drop interface makes it easier to build pages that look and feel polished.

Replicate custom features
If your Shopify store included custom menus or unique product display options, use Shopware’s Twig templates and CMS tools to recreate them.

1.6 Reconfigure Settings and Extensions

Your store’s core functionality must be rebuilt in Shopware before launch.

Payments
Integrate your payment providers, including Stripe, PayPal, Klarna, Apple Pay and Clearpay, which UK shoppers commonly expect. Use official Shopware plugins where possible.

Shipping
Set up shipping zones, rates, and methods using the rule builder, and connect UK carriers such as Royal Mail, Evri or DPD UK.

Taxes
Configure tax zones and rates for all the regions you serve, for example UK VAT at the standard rate of 20 % and, if you ship to the EU, customs and import VAT for your EU customers.

Promotions
Recreate discount codes, gift cards, and automatic promotions using Shopware’s promotion tools.

Plugins
Identify the Shopify apps you relied on and find suitable Shopware plugins. Where no equivalent exists, plan custom development.

1.7 Test, Validate, and Optimise

Before you go live, thorough testing is essential.

Checkout testing
Simulate purchases using various payment and shipping methods.

Performance testing
Check load times and server response under realistic traffic conditions.

SEO validation
Ensure metadata, URLs, and redirects function as intended.

Responsive testing
Verify the design works across all devices and screen sizes.

Team review
Involve your internal teams in reviewing the site. Their feedback can help catch issues you might overlook.

1.8 Go Live with Confidence

Freeze content changes on Shopify
This prevents new data from being missed during the final sync.

Run a final data sync
Import any new orders or customer updates.

Update DNS settings
Point your domain to your new Shopware 6 store.

Monitor performance
Keep a close eye on your site metrics during the first 48 hours. This allows you to respond quickly to any unexpected issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to migrate from Shopify to Shopware 6?

The migration timeline depends on your store’s size, the complexity of your product catalogue, the number of apps and custom features you use, and whether you are redesigning your storefront during the process. Smaller stores with a simple setup might complete migration in a few weeks. More complex stores with large catalogues, custom features, or new design requirements can take several months. At solution25, we create a clear timeline during the planning phase so you know what to expect and can prepare your team.

Will my SEO be affected during migration?

Protecting your SEO is a priority during the move from Shopify to Shopware 6. Our team carefully maps your existing URLs, meta titles, descriptions, and structured data. We implement 301 redirects where needed so search engines can follow your content to its new location. We also review your site structure to ensure key pages remain visible and that your SEO foundations stay strong. These steps help minimise risks to your search rankings and often reveal opportunities to enhance your SEO at the same time.

Can I change my design at the same time as migrating?

Yes, and many businesses choose to do so. Since migration involves rebuilding your store on Shopware 6’s architecture, it is an ideal time to refresh your design. This can include improving mobile responsiveness, updating your brand look, or redesigning navigation and checkout flows to enhance user experience. Shopware 6’s Shopping Experiences tool makes it easy to create flexible, modern designs that work across all devices without always needing a developer for every change.

What happens to my Shopify apps and custom features?

Shopify apps do not transfer directly to Shopware 6. Our team reviews all your app functionality during the planning phase. We determine whether Shopware 6 offers built-in features or available plugins to replace your apps. When needed, we create custom solutions using Shopware’s API-first architecture. This ensures your store continues to deliver the functionality your business and customers rely on.

Will my customer and order data be safe?

Yes. Data integrity is at the core of our process. We migrate your product catalogue, customer records, order history, and content carefully. Our team runs checks at each stage to ensure data accuracy. We verify that relationships between data, such as orders linked to customer accounts, are preserved. Your business history stays intact, and your team can continue offering great service without interruption.

How much downtime should I expect during migration?

We aim to minimise downtime. Most of the migration takes place in a staging environment, so your Shopify store remains live while we work on your Shopware 6 store. When it is time to switch over, we coordinate the go-live during off-peak hours and monitor the transition closely to resolve any issues immediately.

Is migrating to Shopware 6 expensive?
