The moment a customer submits an order, the plugin sends the transaction data to MaxMind's minFraud service. MaxMind analyses it against multiple risk factors and returns a fraud score between 0 and 99. If that score exceeds the threshold you set in the plugin settings, the order is automatically flagged with a "Fraud Check" status for manual review. Legitimate orders below the threshold go through without any interruption.
MaxMind analyses a combination of signals: IP address and geolocation, billing and shipping address consistency, email age and validity, device fingerprinting via a JavaScript snippet included in the plugin, card issuer country match, proxy and VPN detection, and historical fraud patterns. No single signal determines the outcome. The composite score reflects the combined weight of all factors, which makes it significantly more reliable than simpler rule-based checks.
The threshold is a number between 0 and 99 that you configure in the Shopware admin. A lower number flags more orders for review and catches more potential fraud but increases manual workload. A higher number flags fewer orders and reduces manual effort but carries more risk. Many merchants start around 50 and adjust based on their chargeback history (in the UK, card schemes and acquirers monitor chargeback ratios closely) and order volume. You can see fraud scores directly in both the order list and individual order detail pages to monitor how the threshold is performing.
No. The fraud check runs in the background after the order is submitted. Customers complete checkout normally and receive their order confirmation. Only your admin team sees the flagged status, at which point you review the order and approve or reject it manually. This means fraud protection does not add friction to the buying experience for genuine customers.
